스크루지 영감과 짐 캐리

찰스 디킨슨은 영국이 낳은 가장 위대한 소설가의 한사람으로 평가받고 있습니다. 1800년대에 살았던 그는 상상력이 풍부하면서도 시사적이고 다큐멘터리에 능한 작가였습니다. 그의 작품은 모든 이들로부터 사랑을 받았지요. 학식이나 지위에 관계없이 말입니다. 디킨슨은 작품을 통해 당시 사회의 부조리를 고발하기도 하였습니다.

디킨슨의 작품으로는 올리버 트위스트, 크리스마스 케롤 등이 있지요. 올리버 트위스트는 많이 알려져있는 편입니다만 크리스마스 케롤은 다소 생경하게 들리실지 모르겠습니다.

하지만 스크루지 영감하면 고개를 끄덕이지 않을까 싶습니다. 아 그 구두쇠영감 하면서 말입니다. 구두쇠 스크루지 영감이 사실은 올리버 트위스트가 쓴 크리스마스 케롤에 나오는 주인공입니다. 매년 년말이면 연극으로 무대에 올려 지곤 하지요. 2009년 성탄절을 앞두고 디즈니 영화사가 만든 크리스마스 케롤이 상영에 들어갈 모양입니다.(미주지역에는 11월 6일 금요일부터 상영에 들어간다고 합니다)

주인공인 스크루지 역할은 우리에게도 잘 알려진 짐 캐리가 맡았습니다. 이 배우가 영화에 출연할 때 보면 혼신의 힘을 다하여 연기에 몰입하지요. 어쩌면 저런 연기가 나올까 싶을 정도입니다.

캐리는 한 인터뷰에서 일이 아닌 사생활에서는 큰 일 보다는 작은 일에 더 몰입하는 스타일이라고 말하고 있습니다. 쉴 때 잘 쉬고 여유를 가질 줄 아는 사람이 집중하고 몰입해야 할 때 더 잘 집중하고 몰입할 수 있지 않을까요. 짐 케리가 퍼레이드 닷컴과의 인터뷰에서 자신의 삶의 방식과 인생관에 대해 나눈 이야기가 눈길을 끕니다.

<Carrey tries to have peaceful, healthy life>

Jim Carrey, who will be on the big screen this season in A Christmas Carol as the legendary Dickensian character Scrooge, say he's very different at work than at home.

"I'm at a very manic level when I'm working, but when I am home I try to have a very peaceful world and live a healthy life. I have my spirituality. I have my motorcycles. I have a lot of different things in my life that bring me a lot of peace," he tells parade.com.

He says he sweats the small stuff. "I get upset about controlling little things. Huge things I can let go of. I don't sweat my career, but when I have to deal with the cap on the tooth-paste that doesn't go my way, look out! It's the stupid little things like the stereo not working."

Carry says he keeps success in perspective. "I feel like I could be working in a factory where I kind of started out loading trucks. Honestly, I don't have any perspective on it. it's just kind of one thing to the next. it's trying to do work and trying to have fun with what's in front of me. I have to go to that place of, 'I'm gonna try to enjoy every person who's in front of me in that moment, and try and live that way.' That's what I do. So I don't really think about anything iconic.
