어려운 시기엔

우리는 30년대 경제대공황이후 가장 어려운 시기를 보내고 있습니다.

한 때 세계 경제의 중심에 있었던 미국도 예외가 아닙니다. 2009년 3월 현재 실직자 수가 2500만에 이른다고 합니다. 실직한 사람들이 책임지고 있는 가족까지를 고려한다면 엄청난 사람들이 어려움을 겪고 있는 셈이지요. 

미국이나 캐나다의 경우에는 부부가 함께 일하는 경우가 대부분입니다. 씀씀이가 크다보니 한 사람의 수입만으로는 생활이 어렵습니다. 부부 두 사람이 함께 일을 하여도 매달 쓰이는 생활비에다 주택을 구입하기 위하여 빌린 돈, 아이들 사교육비, 일 년에 한두 번 다녀오는 휴가비 등을 고려하면 그것으로도 모자랄 지경이지요.

전문가들은 부부 두 사람 중 한사람이 직업을 잃어도 견딜 수 있도록 현재의 지출을 반으로 줄이라고 경고합니다. 지금 같은 어려운 시기엔 직업을 잃게 될 우려가 많기 때문입니다. 봄바디에라는 이름의 항공기 제작회사가 많은 인원을 해고 하겠다고 발표하자 캐나다 에어라인도 국내선 항공기의 운항을 반으로 줄이겠다는 결정을 발표하였습니다.

Q: It's a confusing time right now. The economic machine is desperately tying to get us spending again, yet we are encouraged to save and only use cash. Any thoughts?

A: I like the idea of saving, especially if you haven't put a high priority on it before. You need a fat emergency fund to account for possible layoffs in your future.

Finding a new job takes longer than before. To stay afloat while doing a search, you should have saved enough to pay for eight months of living expenses, says U.S. author Suze Orman(not six months, as previously recommended).

Spend on necessities, not frivolities, and spend smartly, You should haggle and negotiate on everything you buy, not just cars and houses. Retailers are more than willing to make deals.
