미래는 어떤 모습일까요?

미래를 예측해보는 일은 재미있습니다. 오년 후, 십년 후에 어떤 일이 일어날지 미리 상상해보는 것이지요.

"내가 있는 곳은 어떻게 변해있을까? 나는 또 어떤 모습이 되어있을까? 어디서 무엇을 하고 있을까? 세상은 어떻게 변해 있을까?" 이런 상상을 하면 신이 납니다.

지금은 누구나 핸드폰을 가지고 있지만 불과 십년 전만해도 전화를 가지고 다닌다는 건 상상조차 힘들었습니다. 인터넷이 바꾸어 놓을 세상에 대해서도 예측하지 못하였지요. 미국의 대표적인 자동차기업 제너럴 모터스가 망하리라고 생각한 사람도 없었습니다. 하지만 십년이란 세월은 참으로 많은 것을 바꾸어 놓았습니다.

앞으로 십년 후에는 어떤 일들이 일어날까요? 변화 가운데서 나는 또 어떤 모습으로 대응을 하였을까요? 변화를 거슬러 올라가 기회를 잡았을까요? 아니면 세상은 이렇게 변하였는데 나는 무엇을 하고 있었나 후회하고 있을까요? 상상만으로도 신나는 일이 아닐 수 없습니다.

미래를 예측하고 기회를 잡으려 노력하는 사람에게는 기적이 일어납니다. 세상의 변화를 읽고 길목을 지키고 있다가 낚아채는 사람에게는 운도 따릅니다. 

반면 해가가도 변하지 않고 늘 그대로인 사람이 있습니다. 이런 사람은 스스로 변화하기를 싫어함은 물론 변화가 일어나고 있다는 사실도 인정하지 않으려 듭니다. 새로운 지식을 습득하거나 색다른 경험에 자신을 노출 시키려 하지 않습니다. 그렇다고 인격적 성장이나 성숙도 기대하기 어렵지요.

잠시 짬을 내어 십년 후 세상이 어떻게 변할지, 변화 가운데 나는 어떤 모습 대응하였을지 상상해 보는 것도 재미있을 듯합니다. 

 

 <Will digital age be end of the rote for textbooks?>

At Empire High School in Vail, Ariz., students use computers provided by the school to get their lessons, do their homework and hear podcasts of science lectures.

Down the road at Cienega High School, students with laptops can register for "digital sections" of English, history and science classes.

Throughout the district, a Beyond Textbooks initiative encourages teachers to create – and share – lessons that incorporate their own PowerPoint presentations, along with videos and research materials they find by sifting through reliable Internet sites.

Textbooks have not gone the way of the scroll yet, but many educators say it will not be long before they are upgraded to digital – or replaced with lessons assembled from a wealth of free courseware, educational games, videos and projects on the web.

"Kids are wired differently these days," said Sheryl Abshire, chief technology officer for the Calcasieu Parish school system in Lake Charles, La. "They're digitally nimble. They multi-task, transpose and extrapolate. And they think of knowledge as infinite.

"They don't engage with textbooks that are finite, linear and rote," Abshire continued. "Teachers need digital resources to find those documents, those blogs, those wikis that get them beyond the plain vanilla curriculum in the textbooks."

In California, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced this summer an initiative that would replace some high-school science and math texts with free, "open-source" digital versions.

With California in dire straits, the governor hopes free textbooks could save hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

The initiative, the first such statewide effort, has attracted widespread attention, since California, together with Texas, dominates the nation's textbook market.

"In five years, I think the majority of students will be using digital textbooks," said William Habermehl, superintendent of the 500,000-student Orange County schools. "They can be better than traditional textbooks."

Schools that do not make the switch, Habermehl said, could lose their constituency.
