Listen to the wards of our elders

데이비드 스즈끼는 캐나다에서 잘 알려진 환경보호운동가입니다. TV 출연과 집필 등을 통하여 환경보전의 중요성을 일깨워줍니다. 최근에는 모회사의 텔레비전 광고에 출연하고 있기도 하지요. 칠십대의 나이에도 불구하고 여전히 정력적으로 활동하고 있습니다.

스즈끼씨는 아버지가 자신의 영웅이었다고 말합니다. 아버지는 이야기꾼이었으며 외향적인 성격이라 사람들과도 잘 사귀었다고 하지요. 어린 시절 아버지와 낚시를 다니고 캠핑을 가곤 하였는데 이때부터 자연을 사랑하는 법을 배웠다고 합니다. 지금도 연설을 위한 메모를 작성하거나 책을 쓸 때면 돌아가신 아버지가 청중이 되고, 독자가 된다고 하지요.        

스즈끼씨는 나이든 어른이 하시는 말씀에 귀를 기울일 필요가 있다고 말합니다.

어른들께서 하신 말씀 중 가장 기억에 남는 건 어떤 것인가요?

  

"To do well in Canada as a Japanese-Canadian," Dad said, "you have to work 10 times harder, you must be able to get up and speak extemporaneously, and you must be able to dance."

 Fortunately, hard work was never an obstacle for me and I entered oratorical contests for which Dad drilled me in the art of public speaking. I never understood the dancing part and was not successful in that area.

My mother also taught me useful homilies like "Always clean up your own mess," and "Share; don't be greedy."

Today's youth are bombarded with news about antics of Lindsay Lohan, Amy Winehouse, and Jay-Z, and look to them for inspiration, but that's all the more reason to listen to the words of our elders.

* extemporaneous:(a) ad-libbed, improvised, spontaneous, unrehearsed

                 (ant) prepared

                 If you extemporize, you speak, act, or perform something immediately, without rehearsing or preparing it beforehand. 

                 

* homily: is a speech or piece of writing in which someone complains about the state of do something or tells people how they ought to behave.

                     preachment, sermon
