Spend a little less

경제가 무척 어렵습니다. 미국의 경우 지난 한달 동안에만 육십만에 가까운 사람들(정확히 598,000명)이 직장을 떠나게 되었다고 합니다. 캐나다의 경우도 예외는 아니어서 자난 일월에만 십이만 구천 명이 직장을 잃었습니다. 

2009년 2월 현재 캐나다 전체의 실업률은 7.2%에 이른다는 보도가 있었습니다. 미국은 이보다 좀 더 높은 비슷한 수치를 보이고 있지요. 문제는 아직도 어려움의 끝이 어디일지 모른다는 것입니다.

꼭 필요한 경우가 아니면 사지 않으려드니 모든 산업이 위축되고 있습니다. 특히 자동차 산업은 가장 큰 타격을 입는 분야입니다. 대표적인 자동차 산업의 도시 디트로이트는 큰 위기를 맞고 있으며 자동차 부품공장이 많은 온타리오 주도 상당한 타격을 입고 있습니다.

따지고 보면 우리도 보리 고개라는 말이 있을 정도로 어려웠습니다. 초등학교를 다닐 적에 도시락을 따 다니지 못하던 급우들이 적지 않았습니다. 가방이 없어 보지기에 책을 싸서 허리에 묶어 다니기도 하였지요.

그나마 학교에 다닐 수 있으면 다행이었습니다. 초등학교만 졸업하고 공장으로 가야하는 우리네 누나들도 적지 않았으니까요. 오죽하면 첫 딸은 살림 밑천이라는 말까지 나왔을까요. 첫 딸은 으레 집안일을 돕거나 가발 공장이나 방적공장으로 일하러나가 돈을 벌어 살림에 보태야 하는 줄로 알았습니다.

일할 곳도 거의 없었습니다. 전쟁 후라 기업이라고는 없다시피 할 때였으니까요. 아무리 어렵다고 하여도 그때에 비하면 지금의 형편은 훨씬 나은 편이겠지요.

1930년대 경제 대 공항이 있었을 때 미국역시 어렵기는 마찬가지였습니다.  당시 실업률은 25%에 이르렀으며 먹을 것조차 없었지요. 당시엔 모두가 가난했으니 가난하게 사는 것이 당연한 줄로 알았지요. 지금은 상대적 박탈감으로 인한 어려움이 사람들을 더 힘들게 하지 않을까 싶습니다.

전문가들은 이런 때에는 최대한 지출을 줄이고 견디라고 말합니다. 꼭 필요한 것이 아니면 구매를 최대한 자제하여 돈을 아껴 쓰라는 이야기이지요. 옷을 사거나 선물을 하거나 여행을 하는 일은 최대한 줄이라고 조언합니다. 일주일에 두 번하던 외식을 한번으로 줄이고 영화나 연극 등 엔터테인먼트를 위해 쓰는 지출도 줄이라고 권합니다.

이곳 토론토에서 사업을 하는 교민들은 상당한 타격을 입고 있다고 합니다. 사람들이 주머니를 열지 않으니 생필품 가게를 하는 사람들의 주간 매상이 현격히 줄어들었다고 합니다. 세탁공장이나 세탁소를 하는 사람들도 평상시에 비해 매출이 줄어든다고 아우성입니다.

 앞이 내다보이지 않은 지금 같은 불황엔 기본으로 돌아가 절약하는 것만이 위기를 극복하는 최선의 방법이 아닐까 싶습니다.

In a retirement suite high above Eglinton Ave. W. yesterday, Hyman and Aimmie Leibovitch think back to a time when a 7.2% unemployment rate would've been cause for celebration.

"We had nothing but our families in the Great Depression," said the 86-year-old Minnie, looking to her husband with kind eyes. "We didn't know we were poor back then because everyone was poor."

"I understand what's going on today and how bad people have it," said Hyman, 87, nothing how today's unemployment rate compares with that of the Depression, which reached 25%.

"But there were times(in the '30s) when we didn't have food to eat. I don't think it will ever get that bad today.

When the economy capsized in the years following the infamous Black Tuesday crash of Wall Street in 1929, both of young pair-Hyman living in Montreal, Mannie in Ottawa-were forced to scrape together work to help support their families.

As a 13-year-old, Mannie worked shifts at the local dress factory while Hyman hawked everyting from newspapers to candles to adhesive insect paper, peddling full-time on the frigid winter streets of Quebec.

"My mother would get me a whole box of that sticky fly paper," he said. "You could maybe get to cents for two if you were lucky."

Manni recalls the family meals of the time, which didn't change much from night to night. "Potatoes, meat-the cheapest chunk and mince meat you could get-and not many vegetables," she remembered.

Still, though, even in a period when he was called upon to support his family when his father's salesman job tanked, Hyman said there are lessons to be learned.

The work ethic required to make it through the Great Depression gave he and his wife an ideal set of principles to pass on to their children to use in times of need.

"You just have to learn to use a little less," Minnie said. "Spend a little less, use a little less and you can be okay."
