Valentine's Day

발렌타인데이가 다가오고 있습니다. 크리스마스 시즌이 지나고 새해를 맞이하자마자 상점들은 발렌타인데이 세일을 준비합니다. 가게 곳곳을 핑크빛이나 보랏빛으로 장식하고 사랑하는 사람들을 위한 선물을 사도록 권합니다.

미국이나 캐나다에서는 발렌타인데이를 특별한 날로 생각합니다. 몇 주 전부터 어떤 이벤트를 준비하여 사랑하는 사람을 기쁘게 해줄까, 어떤 선물을 해줄까 생각합니다. 라디오에서는 끊임없이 로맨틱한 음악이 흘러나오고, 신문들은 사랑하는 사람과 보기에 적합한 영화를 소개하기도 합니다.

시애틀의 잠 못 이루는 밤(sleepless in Seattle), 당신이 잠든 사이에(while you were sleeping), 사랑과 영혼(Ghost), 유브 갓  메일(you've got mail), 세렌디피니(Serendipity), 등은 발렌타인데이에 보기에 좋은 영화로 자주 소개되고 있습니다. 조지 울프(George C Wolfe)가 감독하고 리차드 기어(Richard Gere)와 다이엔 레인(Diane Lane)이 주연한 'Nights in Rodanthe', 올리버 스톤(Oliver Stone)이 감독한 'W', 스파이크 리(Spike Lee)가 감독한 '앤 성의 기적(Miracle at St. Anna)'도 언급되는 영화 중 하나이지요.

초등학교에 다니는 학생들은 다양한 색의 예쁜 포장지로 초콜릿이나 사탕을 정성껏 포장하여 친구들에게 나누어 주기도 합니다.

가족이든, 사랑하는 사람이든, 이웃이든, 친구이든 서로 사랑의 마음을 전하고, 사랑을 나누는 일은 소중한 가치이자 의미가 아닐까 생각해봅니다.

금년엔 세계적인 경제 한파를 맞아 그리 요란한 발렌타인데이 선물은 없을 듯합니다. 선물을 사기 위해 얼마의 돈을 쓸 것인가라는 질문에 대부분의 사람들은 20불(한국 돈으로 2만원 조금 넘는 정도) 가량의 선물을 사겠다고 하였습니다.

선물도 좋지만 사랑하는 사람을 위해(특히 남자들이) 맛있는 요리를 준비하여 준다거나 아내가 쉬거나 외출할 수 있도록 아이들을 봐주는 것도 좋은 선물이 되지 않을까 싶습니다.

Valentine's Day is Febury 14. It's a time for romance and love. People send their loved ones cards called Valentines. Some valentines are serious and romantic, others are funny. Lovers give each other gifts such as chocolates, perfume, red roses or other flowers. Children also get involved. They exchange valentines at school with friends and make presents and valentines for their parents.

Some researchers trace the beginnings of Valentine's Day to an ancient Roman fertility festival called Lupercalia. Two youths, dressed in animal skins, would run around the city slapping people with strips of goat skin. This was supposed to increase fertility and keep away evil.

In Roman mythology, Cupid, the god of love, was a baby with magic arrows. If he shot your heart with one of them, you fell in love with the first person you saw. But since Cupid enjoyed making trouble, he might not shoot an arrow at the person you had just fallen in love with!

Some say Valentine's Day started when Claudius the Second was the Roman Emperor. He needed man fight in his army and so he wouldn't let them marry. However the men wanted to marry and stay home with their wives. Lovers were very unhappy with the emperor's law. A Roman bishop named Valentine disobeyed Claudius and performed marriages in secret. After Claudius discovered what Valentine was doing, he put him in jail. While Valentine was in prison, children threw gifts and notes through the bars. This may have started the tradition of sending valentines. Claudius had Bishop Valentine beheaded on Feburary 14, 269 A.D. Two-hundred years later, the Roman Church chose this day to remember him as the special saint of lovers.

The last explanation about the origins of Valentine's Day goes back to an old English belief. February 14 was the day birds were thought to begin mating. It seemed like a good idea to follow the example of nature and choose a mate on this day.

Whatever the true origin of Valentine's Day, Symbols from all these stories appear on valentines. Every February 14, Canadians send more than 60 million card with cupids, roses, bird, hearts and poems on them.
