토론토의 주말

주말 동안 토론토는 맑고 화창하였습니다. 푸른 하늘에 두둥실 흰 구름이 떠가고 푸른 나무와 파란 잔디위로 불어오는 바람은 선선했습니다. 잠시 한 두 차례 비가 내리기도 하였으나 잔디를 푹 적셔주기에도 부족할 정도였지요. 나무가 많아 도시 전체가 공원 같은 느낌을 주는 토론토는 오월과 유월이 가장 좋은 계절이 아닐까 싶습니다.

6월 중순에 토론토에서 지나는 것이 14년만의 일이라 길 양 옆에 자연스럽게 피어나는 들꽃을 바라보는 재미에 푹 빠져 있습니다. 지난 수주일 동안 개나리와 목련, 수선화가 피고 지더니 라일락이 사방에 향기를 뿌리기 시작했습니다. 라일락이 지려하자 이번엔 아카시아 꽃들이 흐드러지게 피었습니다. 주변에 이렇듯 아카시아 나무가 많은지 이번에 처음 알았지요.

개인적으로 아카시아 나무와는 친분이 많답니다. 어린 시절 살았던 과수원 주변엔 아카시아 나무가 많았습니다. 아카시아 나무와 탱자나무가 울타리를 대신했으니 사방에 아카시아 나무가 널려있었지요. 가위바위보를 하여 아카시아 잎을 누가 먼저 털어내나 시합을 하기도 하고 아카시아 꽃을 따 꽃 뿌리 아래 고여 있는 꿀을 빨아먹기도 했었습니다. 무엇보다 아카시아 향이 사방으로 날리면 그 향에 취해 선경에 있는 착각에 빠지곤 하였지요. 토론토에서 아카시아 꽃이 흐드러지게 핀 모습을 보니 아련한 추억들이 떠올랐습니다.

토론토에서는 지난 주간 각종 페스티발이 열렸습니다. 토론토 시내에서는 문화와 예술 축제인 루미나토 페스티발이 있었고 토론토 북쪽의 리치몬드 힐에서는 토요일 하루 헤리티지 빌리지 페스티발이 열렸습니다. 루미나토 페스티발은 토론토 시내에서 벌어졌는데 각종 연주와 전시회, 음식 축제 등의 행사가 펼쳐졌습니다. 어제는 루미나토 페스티발의 마지막 날이었지요.

리치몬드 힐의 헤리티지 페스티발에서는 동네 주민을 위한 축제였는데 인근에 있는 주민들이 가족과 함께 나와 아이스크림을 먹으며 걷는 등 페스티발을 즐기는 모습이 보기에 좋았습니다.      

또 토요일에는 100여명의 사람들이 옷을 벗은 채 자전거를 타고 시내를 활주하는 진풍경도 있었습니다. 자연 보호를 위한 캠페인을 벌이는 모습을 지켜보던 시민들은 어리둥절한 표정이었겠지요. 개인적으로 그들이 자전거를 타고 달리는 모습을 보지 못하여 아쉽지만 퍼포먼스를 통하여 사람들에게 웃음을 선사한 일을 상상만 하여도 재미있습니다.

More than 100 people donned their bells, whistles and birthday suits in the annual World Naked Bike Ride this afternoon.

The ride, which is to protest oil dependency, began at Coronation Park at 1 p.m. where passersby looked confused as the fleet took off towards the downtown core.

"There's a lot of freedom in this," said one naked rider named David, who didn't want his last name used. "You just have to go for it, have no shame for a little while and you'll be all set. You just have to be careful of the bumps while riding naked."

The Saturday bike ride celebrating cycling and the human body is part of a series of international events -- held under the tag line 'ending the indecent exposure to cars and pollution' -- that have been taking place since 2001 in some 25 countries and 70 cities.

The two-hour nude route circled around the Eaton Centre, the Church-Wellesley area and finally ended in Kensington Market.

Shoppers at Yonge-Dundas Square snuck a peek through their fingers as they covered their eyes.

Doug Leacock, 65, who was visiting the city from Peterborough to see Riverdance with his grandkids said the ride was inappropriate for people of all ages.

'THEY CAN DO BETTER'

"I'm totally surprised," he said. "I guess they got people's attention, but I think they can do better than riding naked down the street to make an impact."

Sue Colley, 57, who is on vacation from Louisiana, was on a sightseeing bus when she saw a glimpse of the buttocks-and-breasts brigade.

"I've never seen that and you wouldn't back home," she laughed.

The naked frolic was a quiet one, Toronto Police said. No charges were laid for indecent exposure, although no word on the number of total-body sunburns.

In fact, cyclist Leif Harmsen said most of the voyeurs along the route were supportive.

"A lot of people were yelling, 'Less gas, more ass' and 'Burn fat, not oil,'" he said.

The majority of Toronto's birthday-suit riders were men, but a few women showed up as well. one cyclist named Anna said she got involved because she felt it was a good cause.

"I did wear a bikini because last year when I did it (nude), my boss recognized me from the back," she said. "And it was a little weird. But I may do it in Ottawa or Montreal next year."

Montreal also did their own naked ride yesterday with some 25 nude cyclists taking to the streets.
