반기문 유엔사무총장이 수요일 캐나다의 수도 오타와를 방문하여 스티븐 하퍼 총리와 만난다고 합니다. 오는 가을 한국에서 G-20 정상회담이 열리기전 금년 6월 토론토에서 G-8, G-20 정상회담이 열리는데 사전 협의를 위한 것입니다. 캐나다는 2011년부터 2년 동안 유엔의 비상임이사국의 자격을 얻고 싶은 욕심도 가지고 있습니다.
한국인 유엔사무총장이 유엔의 대표자격으로 캐나다를 방문하여 회담을 나누는 자체가 자랑스럽습니다.
지난해 가을 뉴욕의 유엔 건물을 방문하였을 때 로비에 걸린 역대 유엔사무총장들 사진 속에 반 총장의 자신이 있어 기뻐한 적이 있지요.
<UN secretary general to visit Canada>
OTTAWA — The secretary general of the United Nations will visit Ottawa Wednesday as Canada gears up for the G-8/G-20 summit of world leaders next month.
In addition to talks with Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Ban Ki-moon will meet with Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean, Minister of International Cooperation Bev Oda and Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.
“The visit of the Secretary-General is an opportunity for Canada to reaffirm our commitment to the UN and recognize its central role in promoting peaceful relations and a stable, prosperous world,” Harper’s office said in a press release.
Canada is currently campaigning for a non-voting seat on the UN Security Council. This week, the prime minister of Croatia backed the Canadian bid as Harper visited that country. The UN vote is in the fall for a two-year term that starts in 2011.
In the lead-up to the G-8 leaders’ meeting, Canada will also host Mexican President Felipe Calderon for three days later this month.
