무 소

봄이 되면 이집 저집에서 가라지 세일(garage sale)을 합니다. 오래되어 더 이상 쓰지 않는 물건 중 다른 사람들이 쓸 만한 것을 차고에 내어놓고 싼 값에 판매하는 것이지요. 집 주변 도로 등 몇 군데에 사인을 붙이고 가라지 세일을 한다는 걸 알리면 사람들이 찾아옵니다. 주로 주말 쉬는 날을 이용해 가라지 세일을 하는데 이웃을 알 수 있는 좋은 기회도 되지요. 파는 사람이나 사는 사람이나 얼굴엔 장난기가 가득합니다. 봄이 되면 가라지 세일을 다니는 재미로 산다는 사람이 있을 정도이지요.

꽃들이 만개하고 가지에 파릇파릇 새싹이 돋아나 온 천지를 푸르게 만드는 봄날 가라지 세일을 하는 집을 찾아다니는 재미가 쏠쏠합니다. 하루 빨리 봄이 와 가라지 세일을 한다는 팻말을 볼 수 있었으면 좋겠습니다.

지난 해 한 가라지 세일에서 나무로 조각한 손바닥 크기의 코뿔소를 발견하였습니다. 코를 불을 앞으로 불쑥 내민 모습이 우스꽝스러웠지요. 서재에 놓아두고 가끔 바라보면 좋겠다는 생각이 불쑥 들었습니다. 누구든 매너리즘에 빠지고 게을러질 때가 있습니다. 이럴 때 나무로 조각한 무소를 바라보며 힘을 얻게 되지 않을까 생각하였지요. 왜 무소의 뿔처럼 가라는 광고 의 카피도 있지 않았습니까.

무소는 물러설 줄 모르는 급한 성질의 동물로 알려져 있습니다. 보기와는 다르게 물속에서 오래 머무를 수도 있고 수영도 잘하지요. 사람들의 마음  속에서 무소는 저돌성의 상징이 되어있습니다. 

무소는 많은 어린이들이 좋아하는 동물 중 하나입니다. 아마 몸집이 크고 우스꽝스럽게 생겨서 그런 것이 아닐까 싶습니다. 수영을 잘하는 것 또한 아이들에게는 매력적으로 보이지 않을까 싶습니다.

토론토 동물원에서는 약 이억 가량의 예산을 들여 무소를 들여올 것을 검토하고 있습니다. 불황이 덮쳐 동물원을 찾는 사람들의 숫자가 줄어들자 어떻게 하면 입장객을 늘일 수 있을지를 궁리하던 중 무소를 들여오면 좋겠다는 생각을 한 듯합니다.

새롭게 들여올 무소가 사람들의 관심을 끌었으면 좋겠습니다. 여러분은 혹 무소를 직접 보신 적이 있으신지요?  개인적으로 무소를 마지막 본 건 서울 대공원이 아니었나싶습니다. 서울 대공원의 동물원 역시 세계적인 규모이지요?  봄이 오고 있습니다. 날이 따뜻해지면 시간을 내어 재래시장에도 나가보고 가족과 함께 동물원을 찾아보시면 어떨까요?

가야할 길을 주저함 없이 가기 위해 가끔 머리를 비울 필요도 있습니다.

<Toronto Zoo board OKs importing pair from South Africa>

Two female white rhinos could be huge beasts of fiscal burden tor the Toronto Zoo.

But they will also be a much needed boost for the attraction's animal lineup, staff say.

The Toronto Zoo board of directors decided yesterday to fork over $200,000 to buy and import the southern white rhinos - which are actually grey -from South Africa.

Following the September death of Yeki, a 25-year-old white rhino who had been at the zoo since 2001, there is only one southern white rhino and she can no longer breed.

Zoo staff told the board the rhinos are "a very popular species, and the expensive imports would also be used for breeding.

"I think it's worth it. It's a world-class zoo," said Councillor Paul Ainslie, a new appointment to the zoo board, nothing large animals are particularly popular with kids.

on paper it looks a little expensive but rhinos don't come cheap."

But spending $200,000 for the endangered white rhinos is cutting the zoo's animal transaction reserve roughly in half, zoo CEO Cal White said.

"We have to wrestle with that now - how do we get that reserve filled up," he said, noting the white rhinos are not from another zoo but from a wildlife preserve -like property in South Africa, which is driving up the cost.

"The big change that's occurred with(animals)like white rhinos is the cost. It's just way more now than it was 10 years ago," White said. "If this trend keeps up with animals, we can't do it. So that's something we have to wrestle with.

Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker, a member of the board, said the zoo should consider a naming contest for the two new females, with any proceeds going back into the reserve fund.

While De Baeremaeker said the rhinos should be given personal names from donors, White said there may be and opportunity for corporate sponsorship.
