81회 아카데미 시상식에서 슬럼독 밀리언에어가 예상대로 작품상, 감독상을 비롯한 여덟 개의 상을 휩쓸었습니다. 적은 예산으로 만들어진 작품이라 다윗에 비교되기도 했던 영화이기도 하지요. 슬럼독이 비평가나 관객들에게 선호되는 것을 보면서 고유한 전통과 문화가 세계 사람들에게 감동을 줄 수 있음을 확인할 수 있었습니다.

슬럼독은 아주 적은 예산으로 제작된 영화이지요. 제작자나 감독은 이 영화가 크게 히트하게 될 줄 몰랐었습니다. 처음 이 영화를 판매하려고 할 때 바로 DVD로 제작하면 어떻겠느냐는 제안을 받을 정도였지요.

영화가 크게 성공할 수 있겠구나하고 생각했던 게 지난해 여름 토론토 영화제에서 보여준 관객들의 반응을 본 후였다고 합니다.

인도의 뭄바이에서 주로 촬영되었으며 가난하고 지저분한 환경이 그대로 영화의 장면 속에 노출되었지요. 인도의 음악과 인도인의 삶 또한 영화가운데 자연스레 나타나는 걸 볼 수 있었습니다.

이 영화는 영국출신의 감독 데니보일에 의해 만들어졌습니다. 앞으로 영화를 만드는 감독이나 영화에 종사하는 사람들이 언어 문제만 해결될 수 있다면 우리도 아카데미 작품상 후보에 오를 수 있는 작품들을 많이 만들 수 있지 않을까 하는 희망을 가져보았습니다.

이번 아카데미 상 시상식에서 아카데미 상 여우주연상을 수상한 케이트 윈즐릿에 대한 이야기입니다. 케이트 윈즐릿은 여섯 번이나 노미네이트 된 끝에 이번에 드디어 상을 받게 되었습니다. 영화 '책을 읽어주는 사람(The Reader)에서 여주인공 한나(hannah)역으로 빛나는 연기를 보여주었습니다. 이 영화는 유태인 학살의 현장을 재조명한 영화인데 역사적 사실과 인간의 심리 그리고 어린 시절의 경험이 사람들에게 미치는 영향 등 많은 생각할 거리를 제공하는 영화였습니다.

케이트는 영화 타이타닉에서 여주인공으로 연기한 바 있지요. 세계인의 가슴 속에 고스란히 남아있는 타이타닉의 감동은 앞으로도 오랫동안 지속되지 않을까 싶습니다. 타이타닉이 재미있고 감동적이긴 하였지만 여주인공 케이트의 연기가 완전히 농익었다고 하기에는 어딘가 아쉬움이 있었습니다. 하지만 이번 책을 읽어주는 사람에서 보여준 그녀의 연기는 눈부신 것이었습니다. 이 영화는 케이트 윈즐릿을 확고하게 역사상 최고 여배우의 반열에 올려주지 않을까 싶습니다.

영국출신의 배우 케이트 윈즐릿의 수상을 많은 사람들이 함께 기뻐해 주었습니다. 프라이스 워터하우스에서 47년을 일한 케이트의 아버지가 시상식 장에 참석하여 아빠와 함께 기쁨을 나누는 케이트의 모습을 보는 것도 인상적이었지요.

자신이 좋아하는 일을 하고 또 꾸준히 노력하면 최고의 자리에 설 수 있음을 윈즐릿을 통하여 또 한 번 확인 할 수 있었습니다.

Bollywood came to Hollywood last night, ad the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sent the latest in a growing line of underdog movies to the top of the heap, giving the low-budget Dickensian Mumbai drama 'Slumdog Millionaire' eight awards including best picture,  director, and adapted screenplay.

The awards came on a night that the Academy made a pitch for the masses, shrugging off criticism that it ignored popular movies in its list of nominees by emphasizing the commercial offerings that make up the bulk of moviegoer's diet.

The 81st annual Oscars at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles included a song-and-dance number featuring the stars of Disney's money-spinning phenom High School Musical, film montages with clips from non Oscar fare such as 'Space Chimps' and 'Sex and the City, and frequent references to last year's box-office champ 'The Dark Knight.' Producers had spoken of the need to court viewers who had fled the broadcast in recent years.

Presenting a quarter of awards, Will Smith joked, "I love action movies. I happen to love movies that have car chases and explosions, and excitement and - whats the word I'm looking for? Oh! Fans."

The broadcast used host Hugh Jackman sparingly but effectively, mainly as a song-and-dance man in a pair of variety numbers.

And it served up plenty of memorable moments, both comical and sentimental.

When the  late Heath Ledger won best-supporting actor for his turn as the Joker in 'The Dark Night, prompting a standing ovation, his parents and sister accepted the award on his behalf.

Winning the best-actor honours for his portrayal of Harvey Milk, the first openly gas California politician, Sean Penn criticized those who voted against Proposition 8 last year, whish banned gay marriage in the states. Earlier, the film's screen-writer Dustin Lance Black thanked his mother for her acceptance of his sexuality, and promised homosexual young men and women that, 'very soon you will have equal rights, federally, across this great nation of ours."

The show proved much looser than recent Oscars. When Kate Winslet won for best actress for the turn as an illiterate concentration-camp guard in 'The Reader' she asked her father to whistle so she could locate him in the auditorium, which eh did. A previously taped segment on the year's comedies with James Franco and Canadian actor Seth Rogen turned loopy when, mimicking a moment from 'The Wrestler, Mr. Franco staple-gunned a dollar bill to Mr. Rogen's cheek.
