코요테

코요테나 늑대, 여우, 너구리 등 우리와 비교적 친숙했던 동물들을 야생에서 보는 건 더 이상 어렵게 되었지요? 그들은 어디로 사라져 간 것일까요? 혹 사람들이 이들과 어울려 살기를 거부했기 때문이 아닐까요?

어쩌면 그들의 삶을 인간들이 억지로 빼앗은 걸지도 모르겠습니다. 때로는 이들을 사냥하여 잡아먹기도 했을 터이고 애써 기르는 가축들을 해치니 때론 총으로 쏘아 죽이기도 했을 터이지요.

생태계는 먹이 사슬이 있어서 강제 하지 않아도 저절로 개체수가 적당히 유지되어 질서를 가지게 되어있지 않을까요. 그렇게 본다면 총으로 이들을 쏘아죽이거나, 멀리 쫓아버리거나 하는 일은 바람직한 것만은 아닐 듯합니다. 직접 사람을 공격하여 다치게 하거나 목숨이 위험한 지경에 빠트리지 않는다면 이들과 함께 더불어 사는 것도 좋지 않을까요? 사라져가는 동물들이 자연가운데 존재하고 있다면 우리가 호흡하는 생태계가 건전하다는 뜻도 될 수 있겠지요.

며칠 전부터 토론토 시내에 코요테(북아메리카의 이리)가 나타나 사람들을 당혹스럽게 하고 있습니다. 직접 사람을 공격하지는 않았지만 치와와 같은 작은 개들에게 위협을 가하였습니다.

덩치가 작은 애완견을 가진 주민이나 어린 아이가 있는 부모들은 이 코요테를 없애달라고 강력하게 요청하고 있습니다. 아직은 추운 겨울이라 아이들이 밖으로 나가 놀 일이 없지만 날이 더워져 집 뒤뜰에서 뛰어 놀게 되면 아이들이 다칠 수도 있다는 것이지요.

다른 한 편에서는 코요테를 쫒지 말고 자연스럽게 활동할 수 있도록 내버려 두어야 한다고 목소리를 높입니다. 사람을 직접 해치는 일이 발생하지 않는 한 그들과 함께 살아야 한다는 게 이들의 주장이이요.

이런 논의들을 보면서 아직도 지구상에 야생 동물들이 존재하고 있다는 건 축복이 아닐까 싶습니다.

우리 조상들과 함께 호흡하였던 호랑이가 그 본고장 시베리아에서도 사라져 멸종 상태에 이르렀다고 하지요. 조상 대대로 경이의 대상이 되기도 하였고 두려움 그 자체이기도 하였던 호랑이가 사라진 다는 건 어쩌면 호랑이 담배 피우던 시절의 이야기가 사라진다는 뜻이기도 하겠지요. 정말 호랑이 담배 피우던 시절의 이야기를 잃고 싶지는 않습니다.

The Animal Alliance of Canada is calling on Toronto to set up and animal welfare advisory committee to help it deal with wildlife, saying the city can't get rid of coyotes, so it should learn how to live with them.

"We need to get past the hysteria," alliance director Liz White said.  In a letter to sent to the city yesterday on behalf of Animal Alliance says efforts to get rid of foxes and coyotes inevitably fail, and animals return. If they're killed, the letter says, new animals simply take their place.

The letter cites the village of Greely, near Ottawa, as an example. After about 20 pets went missing in 2007, trappers were hired to deal with the problem.

"This community killed over two dozen coyotes, and within a year the coyotes were back and the conflict continued.

The letter is co-signed by group such as the humane societies of Canada and the United States, Born Free, the Canadian Alliance for Furbearing Animals, Canadians for Bears, Earthroots, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the ontario Wildlife Coalition and Zoocheck Canada.

White said programs to revitalize Toronto's ravines and waterfront have created and ideal habitat for wildlife.

That's led to conflict in the Beach neighbourhood, however, where two dogs have been attacked in recent days, sparking calls for coyotes to be trapped or shot.

White said such efforts would be futile, saying that one price we pay for healthy environment.

"With the greening of the city, we're going to see more wildlife, and that's a good thing," she said.
