영화 보실래요?

노스 아메리카 사람들은 여가시간을 보내는 데 많은 돈을 쓰는 편입니다. 일 년에 한두 번 여행을 떠나는 일을 당연하게 생각합니다. 하루 이틀에 다녀오는 것이 아니라 일주일 이주일 동안 다녀오지요.

십오 년 전의 일입니다. 사업 파트너였던 네덜란드 친구 헤야는 12월 중순이면 일을 마무리하고 일월 중순까지 약 한달 동안 휴가를 떠난다고 하였습니다. 직장에 다니는 사람이 어떻게 그렇게 할 수 있을까 궁금했지요. 헤야는 자신 만이 아니라 네덜란드인 대부분은 그렇게 여행을 다녀온다고 말했습니다. 당시 한국에서 직장 생활을 하던 저로써는 상상하기도 힘든 일이었지요.

이곳에 와보니 그게 아주 자연스러운 일임을 알게 되었지요. 많은 토론토니언들(토론토에 사른 사람들을 그렇게 부르기도 함)은 날이 추워지면 일주일이든 열흘이든 시간을 내어 따뜻한 남쪽으로 여행을 떠납니다. 멕시코나 쿠바, 도미니카 등 케러비언 지역으로 떠나는 사람이 많습니다. 자동차를 몰고 플로리다로 내려가 몇 달을 지내다가 날이 따뜻해지면 돌아오는 사람도 적지 않지요. 은퇴한 사람의 경우 특히 그렇습니다.

스포츠 경기를 즐겨 봅니다. 특히 아이스 하키는 이곳 캐나다 사람들이 가장 좋아하는 운동입니다. 토론토 사람들은 토론토 메이폴 립스(Maple Leafs)의 광적인 팬들입니다. 메이폴 립스는 늘 하위권에 맴돌지만 하키 경기장에는 사람들로 가득합니다. 입장료가 이십만 원에서 삼십만 원에 이르지만 경기장을 찾는 걸 큰 기쁨으로 알지요. 애인과 함께 간다면 오십만 원(우리 우리 돈으로 환산하여) 이상을 쉽게 쓰지만 서스럼없이 표를 삽니다. 메이폴 립스의 경기가 있는 날에는 경기장 앞을 서성거리는 암표상이 한둘이 아닙니다.

농구경기도 마찬가지입니다. 토론토를 연고로 한 랩터즈(Raptors)가 좋은 성적을 올리지 못함에도 약 이만 명을 수용하는 체육관은 늘 만원을 이룹니다. 농구경기의 입장권 역시 아이스 하키 경기의 입장권 값이랑 맞먹습니다. 가장 싼 티켓을 산다하더라도 오만원은 주어야 하지요. 오만 원권 좌석에 앉아 경기장 아래를 내려다보면 선수들이 개미만큼 작아 보입니다.

 야구 시즌(4월에 시작되는)이 다가오면 사람들은 야구장을 찾기 시작합니다. 93년과 94년 연달아 월드시리즈를 재패한 이래 토론토 블루 제이스(Blue Jays)의 성적은 형편이 없습니다. 3월에 들어서자마자 각 팀들은 플로리다에 스프링캠프를 차리고 훈련에 돌입하였습니다. 공식적인 예비경기도 시작되었지요. 이제 약 삼주 후면 본격적인 시즌에 들어갑니다. 야구 경기관람료 역시 만만치 않지만 많은 가족들이 야구장을 즐겨 찾습니다.

콘서트에 직접 구경을 가자면 엄청난 비용이 들어갑니다. 곧 록 가수 블루스 스프링턴(Bruce Springsteen)이 토론토에서 연주를 한다고 합니다. 벌써 티켓이 불티나게 팔리고 있습니다. 이런 연주는 티켓이 순식간에 매진되곤 하지요. 

클래식음악 연주나 오페라 구경에도 적지 않은 비용이 들어갑니다. 최근 불황을 맞아 여가를 위해 쓰는 비용을 대폭 줄이기 시작했습니다. 이에 따라 영화산업이 예상치 못한 큰 호황을 누리고 있습니다. 불황이면 관객이 줄어들기 마련이지만 영화관의 경우는 오히려 관람객의 수가 늘어나고 있습니다.

세계적인 불황을 맞아 많은 사람들이 일자리를 잃어가는 지금 누구든 미래에 대한 불안을 느낍니다. 크고 작은 차이만 있을 뿐 불안을 느끼는 건 마찬가지입니다. 미래에 대한 불안감은 사람들로 하여금 돈을 쓰지 않게 하지요. 많은 사람들이 큰돈을 들여 경기장이나 연주장을 찾는 대신 영화관으로 발길을 돌리고 있습니다.

개인적으로도 영화관에 가기를 즐겨합니다. 영화는 책을 읽으며 느끼며 행복감과는 또 다른 기쁨을 줍니다. 영화에는 문화와 역사가 담겨 있고 무엇보다 이야기가 있습니다. 영화를 보면서 과거로 되돌아가기도 하고 미래로의 여행을 하기도 합니다. 영화는 단순한 즐거움만 주는 게 아니라 우리가 경험해보지 못한 것을 간접적으로 경험할 수 있게 합니다.

* Bad times seem to be good for the movies, with box-office sales up 11 per cent so far this year

Dim the lights and delve into the popcorn. The world outside may be spinning crazily out of control, but here inside Toronto's movie houses, a heartening tale is flickering to life.

It's a story of success in the face of despair, of an undying love, and yes - like most Hollywood fare - it reaffirms what most people already know: Bad times really are good times for the movies.

"It's actually been shockingly stable. We read all the doom and gloom, and we've been expecting there might be some ripples in the water, but to be honest, we haven't really seen it," says Tim Bourgette, manager of the not-for-profit Revue Cinema on Roncesvalles Avenue.

In a scene reminiscent of the movie-mad Great Depression, the 243-seat cinema was packed for its first screening of Milk last weekend, and is consistently drawing strong crowds from its loyal local base.

 As long as something interesting is on the screen, Mr. Bourgette said, people will come strolling in.

"The film business is really funny. Irrespective of the economic climate, you'll have a bang-up year if the films are good," he said.

And a bang-up year is exactly what 2009 is shaping up to be.

So far this year, Canadian box office sales are up 11.1 per cent on the same period last year, according to media measurement company Rentrak.

Movie giant Cineplex Entertainment set national records in 2008, with tickets sales soaring in its final quarter as the world outside staggered under increasingly dire financial news.

The company is on track to perform even better in 2009, said vice-president of communications, Pat Marshall. "These are impressive numbers," she said of the national figures.

Consensus among Toronto's cinema operators is that, locally, the outlook is even more vibrant.

Ticket sales at the Fox Theatre at the eastern end of the Beach are matching sales for this period last year, when the upstart cinema was still cashing in on opening promotions.

Business has been "very good" at the Rainbow Cinema Market Square near St. Lawrence Market, where the full-priced Friday and Saturday "date" crowds remain as devoted as those for $4 Tuesdays and $6 daily matinees.

And Bloor Cinema's Tuesday night advance screening of The Watchmen inspired a lineup that stretched a city block.

Such is life in a city of cinephiles, but that doesn't mean patrons are easy to please.

While Oscar films remain the bread-and-butter money earners, a raft of new offerings is hitting Toronto's film screens, including specialty documentaries, opera and sports telecasts.

It's partly due to the sophistication of local film viewers, and partly due to increased competition among the revived repertory theatres, says The Fox co-owner Andy Willick, who plans to offer big-screen video gaming soon.

"People are demanding new kinds of entertainment, and I think that's especially true right now when you're kind of stuck at home, saying you're not going to go on vacation this year," Mr. Willick said.

And despite the plethora of in-home entertainment options, it's that bigger leisure sector that the cinema industry considers its biggest competitor, squaring off against holidays, sports events, concerts and restaurant meals.

In that light, those downbeat stories filling the business pages - and causing people to cast a critical eye on their spending - could be the ticket to winning back patrons to the movie habit.

At a daytime Movies for Mommies screening of Revolutionary Road this week, the moms and dads said they'll cut back on dinners and pricier entertainment options before ditching the cinema.

"I like the whole experience of the theatre. You turn off your phone, you don't have to answer the door, you just get to sit in a quiet place and be entertained," Nicole Bell said as she settled daughter Zoe in for the show. "It'll stay on my calendar."
