죽기 전에 꼭 해보고 싶은 일

인생에서 가장 가치 있는 일이 무엇이라 생각하십니까? 평생에 꼭 한번 해보고 싶은 일은 무엇입니까? 죽기 전에 이것만은 하고 싶다는 게 있다면 어떤 것들일까요?

사람들은 정작 자신이 하고 싶은 일, 가치 있는 일은 잊어버리고 살아갑니다. 열심히 노력하긴 했는데 그동안 무엇을 하고 살았는지 모르겠다며 안타까워하곤 하지요.

큰돈을 벌어 부자가 되는 일, 열심히 일하여 승진하는 일, 성공의 길로 나아가는 일 이런 일들은 참으로 중요한 일입니다.

하지만 사람들은 죽어가면서 돈을 더 많이 벌지 못해 안타까웠다라고 하기보다는 더 많이 사랑하지 못해 미안하다고 말합니다. 더 높은 자리까지 승진하지 못하여 아쉽다고 하기보다는 아이들과 함께 더 많은 시간을 보내지 못한 게 후회스럽다고 말합니다. 더 성공하지 못하여 억울해 하기보다는 배우자에게 좀 더 잘해주지 못하여 안타깝다고 합니다.

우리 삶은 일과 가족, 친구와 건강, 자신의 영혼 등 다섯 개의 공을 두 손으로 저글링하며 사는 것이라 하지요. 일이라는 공은 고무로 만들어졌으나 나머지 네 개의 공은 유리로 만들어져있답니다. 실수로 떨어트려도 되는 공은 고무로 된 공이나 절대 떨어트려서 안 될 공은 유리로 된 공입니다. 한번이라도 떨어뜨리면 깨어져 원상복귀가 불가능 하니까요. 대부분의 사람들은 고무로 된 공은 절대 떨어트리면 안 되는 줄 알면서도 유리로 된 공 즉 가족이나 친구 건강과 영혼은 함부로 다루는 경향이 있습니다. 

오늘 수필을 쓰시는 박 선생님과 점심을 함께 하였습니다. 선생님은 71년에 캐나다로 이민을 오시어 '타는 목마름으로', '온타리오 호숫가에서', '캐나다에 심은 조선호박'등 여러 권의 수필집을 내셨으며 캐나다 문인협회 회장을 지내시는 등 창작활동도 열심히 하시는 분입니다. 지금도 수필 강좌를 운영하시며 글쓰기 지도를 하시지요.

선생님은 열심히 일하신 후 58세에 은퇴하셨습니다. 세 자녀 모두 대학원 공부를 마치고 직장을 가진 때였지요. 은퇴 후에는 글쓰기와 강의, 여행과 운동을 하시며 평온한 삶을 누리고 계십니다. 의사인 아들과 대기업에서 관리자로 일하는 두 딸 등 세 자녀 모두 가정을 이루었습니다. 자신이 원하는 걸 백 퍼센트 다 이루지는 못하였지만 그저 구십 프로정도는 이룬 것 같다며 수줍게 웃으셨습니다.

나이가 드니 쓰임새가 크지 않아 욕심만 내지 않으면 힘들지 않게 살 수 있다고 하셨습니다. 한 달에 한번은 아들과 딸 손자 손녀 등 온 식구들이 모여 식사를 하며 오붓한 시간을 가진다며 소년 같은 얼굴로 미소 지으셨습니다. 누구든 미리 준비하면 안정된 노년을 보낼 수 있다는 말씀은 값비싼 교훈으로 여겨졌습니다. 일, 가족, 친구, 건강, 영혼이라는 다섯 개의 공으로 실수 없이 저글링을 마치신-지금도 계속 되고 있지만-선배님이 자랑스러웠습니다.

개인적으로 죽기 전에 세계 곳곳을 여행하면서 그곳의 문화를 체험하며 다양한 사람들을 만나고 싶습니다. 아침에 해 뜨는 모습을 바라보며 경이를 느끼며, 저녁에 노을이 들려주는 이야기를 듣고 싶습니다. 사르트르가 자주 갔던 카페에 앉아 커피를 마시며 책을 읽고 싶습니다. 죄와 벌의 무대가 된 세인트 피터스버그에서 도스또엡스키를 만나고 싶습니다. 세계 구석구석을 다니며 사색하고 싶습니다. 요리도 몇 개 배우고 싶습니다. 정성껏 요리를 만들고 친구들을 초대하여 함께 즐기고 싶습니다.

'니콜'과 '리브즈'는 폴라로이드 카메라를 들고 사람들을 만나고 있습니다. 죽기 전에 꼭 해보고 싶은 것이 무엇이냐고 묻습니다. 평생에 꼭 해보고 싶은 일 몇 가지만 말해 달라면 어떻게 대답하시렵니까?      

<A better kind of death wish>

What do you want to do before you die?

That question has taken two women and their Polaroid cameras across the United States, and now to India, on a quest to discover what people most value.

Sometimes respondents express trepidation about the presumed grandiosity of the question, but Nicole Kenney and KS Rives explain that anything goes. Answers have ranged from a trip to Disneyland to changing the world, from a night of passion with a model to an elephant ride. The shutter goes off in the moment someone shares his or her aspiration.

So far, Kenney, from Brooklyn, N. Y., and the Chicago, Ill.-based Rives have photographed hundreds of Americans.

The friends, who are currently touring India, say they envisioned a project that depicted cross-cultural similarities but also celebrated the differences. There are people of deep faith in both countries; young women with wildly different dreams; mothers who want their children to be happy.

The artists also wanted to get people thinking about how they could realize their goals.

"The real part of the project's effect isn't even something that we see," says Rives. "People have a choice to take action or not."

The Polaroids have been exhibited in the U. S. and are also posted on beforeidieiwantto.org,where viewers are encouraged to shoot their own Polaroids and send them in. Kenney and Rives, pictured in the centre of the bottom row, said they wanted to take the project international, and India seemed like fertile ground.

"There are so many different types of people in India, and it's also a very different culture than what we are used to in the United States," Kenney says. "Generally, people are on a more day-to-day existence and don't have the privileges we do back home."

Residents of a New Delhi slum had a hard time conceptualizing the idea of being able to do anything. A translator had to provide options, such as opening up a shop or going to school.

"I guess the ability to dream comes with financial stability and comfort," Kenney says.

The project forces people to confront their own mortality; the Polaroid is a relevant medium because it, too, is dying.

Other themes emerged. The women found that people in the U. S. wanted to have an answer no one else had given before. "For example, one woman said she wanted to write a novel, but when she found out that someone has said that before, she changed her answer. In India, it's not uncommon for us to interview one person, and then the next two or so in line will pick the same answer," Kenney says.

"I think our culture in general is one of big dreams," adds Rives. "That's just how we grow up. We grow up knowing that we can do anything if we just work hard enough."

With the help of grant money, Kenney and Rives hope to take the Before I Die project around the world.
